Na de mysterieuze dood van zijn tante verhuist de advocaat Bryan Becket naar haar grote huis in Victoriaanse stijl. Sceptisch als hij is, zet hij de vreemde ongelukken die gebeuren, telkens weer van zich af. Maar dan worden de gebeurtenissen een stuk persoonlijker; hij hoort 's nachts gefluister en ziet verschijningen in het donker. Langzaam maar zeker komt de waarheid boven water.
