Post Description
Released back in 1997, Jona Lomu's Rugby was the first rugby arcade game that hit the PS, if any console. It made extensive use of all parts of the gamepad, and if you didn't know the rules of rugby, you'd be lost straightaway.
At the time it was lauded as a quality sporting game and it deserved the plaudits. It had a number of game modes and a variety of teams to play. Once the controls were learnt (and that did take time) the gameplay was very smooth indeed. There was the odd problem in the gameplay which didn't quite follow the rules of real rugby, but at least they were consistent and you could defend / play around it.
After playing yourself in to form in the knockout mode it was time to try the main challenge of the game - the World Cup. This was set a standard difficulty and was challenging with strong rugby nations and nigh impossible with the fringe teams. But it was a satisfying gaming experience.
There was the regional cups and once they were completed a secret cup was opened with the humourous Team Lomu. Great fun. And there was also the 'classic match' scenario where you took the role of a team in a historical game in an effort to emulate history. I could not get Japan to beat New Zealand, and tip my hat to any who could.
