KATARIBE, meaning storyteller in Japanese, is an album of solo piano compositions by Missa Johnouchi. It is one of many fine releases on Pacific Moon, a label dedicated to new Asian music. Johnouchi has an extensive background in scoring for television and film that is deeply inspired by nature. Many of the compositions included take the motif of snow, which perfectly represents her playing style. "Snow Forest" evokes the stillness of a snow-covered landscape. "Sekka" glistens with slowly drifting arpeggios. The compositions "Hatsuyuki" and the closing track "Yukimai" also convey a reflective purity. The song "Shuufu" is melancholy without being consumed in its longing. Johnouchi crafts bittersweet melodies with lilting chord progressions making KATARIBE a starkly beautiful recording to behold.
